Peggy Payne Coleman

Services for Peggy Payne Coleman were held Friday, Aug. 17, 2018, at 4 p.m. at McClain-Hays Chapel with Dr. Dan Howard officiating.

Burial followed in Coldwater Cemetery next to her beloved husband, Dewey Vincent Coleman.  McClain-Hays Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.                                                                   

Mrs. Coleman, 85, of Oxford, died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2018.

She passed away peacefully into the presence of the Lord and Savior after a long fight with cancer.

She was born July 21, 1933, at Philadelphia, Neshoba County, Miss., to Clois Ethel Payne and Mary Eunice Tolbert.

She graduated from Coldwater High School and was valedictorian of her class.  She received a Technical Business Degree in Memphis, Tenn.

On her first job at Life and Casualty Insurance Company in Memphis, she met her future husband, Dewey Vincent Coleman, whom she married on Oct. 15, 1953.

She later worked for the Social Security Administration for 30 years in Memphis, Philadelphia, Pensacola and Cleveland.  She retired to Oxford to watch her beloved Ole Miss Rebels play football, basketball and baseball, as she was an ardent fan.

She loved to write poetry. Her hobbies were gardening and making greeting cards on her computer for friends and relatives.

She also enjoyed making the Grace Sunday School class yearbook at North Oxford Baptist Church where she was a member for many years.  She was a church pianist for over 30 years and played for several musical groups, choirs and quartets.  She also taught piano in Oxford to a multitude of students of all ages.

Survivors include her children, Patricia Lynn Coleman Stewart (Mike) of Aurora, Colo.,  Ed Coleman(Brad) of Knoxville, Tenn., Bryan Coleman (Karen) of Cleveland, Miss; sisters, Yvonne Payne Cheatham of Franklin, N.C., Mabe Payne Turner of Philadelphia, Miss., Laquita Payne Edmonds of Mooresville, N.C., Jo Payne Walters of Philadelphia, Florence (Weegie) Payne Thomas (Robert) of Philadelphia, Glenda Payne Gregory (Jimmie) of Louisville, Miss., Rhonda Payne Thomas of Philadelphia; brothers, Hoyt Payne (Margie) of Philadelphia, Uhl Payne (Janice) of Philadelphia and sister-in-law, Rachel Payne.

Mrs. Payne was preceded in death by her parents, Clois and Eunice Payne.

Pallbearers were Cameron Stewart, Bill Watkins, Mark Walters, Paul Payne, Greg Coker, Randy Thomas, Buddy Payne and Michael Gregory.  Honorary pallbearers were Scott Payne, Ed Payne, Rick Coker, Phil Thomas, John Payne, Al Cheatham, Rex Edmonds and David Edmonds.
