Fans of the Lafayette Commodores and the Oxford Chargers can make a little more of the rivalry ahead of Friday’s Crosstown Classic football game.

The two schools have teamed up with the United Way of Oxford and Lafayette County for the annual Crosstown Classic United Way Challenge.

The two teams will face off on the gridiron at Bobby Holcomb Field beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, but until then fans can compete for their chosen school and raise money for the United Way.

“The Crosstown Classic United Way Challenge provides a perfect opportunity to partner with our friends at Oxford School District and Lafayette County School District to make a meaningful impact throughout the LOU community,” UWOLC’s Executive Director Kurt Brummett said in a recent news release. “Whether someone donates in support of the Chargers or Commodores, the contribution will make a significant difference in the lives of others.”

Each school will raise money through donations that can be presented in person at the UWLOC office, via an online donation or through a text-to-donate code. The school that raises the most money will be presented a trophy following the close of the competition.

Donations must be collected by 11:59 p.m. Wednesday to count towards this year’s competition. Commodore fans looking to get involved can text ‘DORES’ to 40403. Oxford fans should text ‘CHARGERS’ to 40403. Donators should follow the link when prompted to complete their donation.

Individuals can also donate by visiting online at www.unitedwayoxfordms.org/dores for Lafayette or www.unitedwayoxfordms.org/chargers for Oxford.

Cash and check donations will also be accepted at the United Way tent, which will be set up during Friday’s game.

The Crosstown Classic United Way Challenge is currently tied. Lafayette won the contest last year, while Oxford took the victory on the football field.
