There is a new No. 1 team in Mississippi.

After Starkville’s upset loss at the hands of Northwest Rankin last Friday, Hattiesburg takes over the top in the latest Associated Press Top-10. The Tigers (6-0) reach No. 1 for the first time this season.

Starkville (5-1) dropped five spots to No. 6 while Northwest Rankin (5-1) moved up three spots to No. 4 following their 27-20 win over the Yellowjackets.

Horn Lake (7-0) moves up to No. 2 and Brandon (6-1) follows suit, moving up a slot to No. 3. West Point (5-1) rounds out the top-half of the poll. Horn Lake had more first-place votes with five but Hattiesburg (3 first-place votes) received three more overall points to claim No. 1. Brandon also received one-first place vote.

Behind Starkville is Madison Central (5-1), who drops a spot to No. 7 despite their 49-8 win over Murrah last week.

The final three spots remained the same with Olive Branch (6-0), East Central (6-0), and Clinton (6-1) rounding out the No. 7-10 slots, respectively.

There is good news coming out of the Class 3A poll this week for Water Valley. The Blue Devils (6-1) finally crack the Top-5 after sitting just on the outside for several weeks. They are tied with Columbia (5-1) at No. 5 with both receiving 19 points.

Things remain the same for Lafayette in the Class 4A poll. The Commodores (4-2) stay at No. 4 following their 47-8 win over Saltillo last week. They also received one point in the Top-10 poll.
