The Commodores left with a 42-13 win over the Gators of Lake Cormorant.

Lafayette quarterback Randy Anderson rushed for five first-half touchdowns to break things open.

“It was a lot of fun to watch to be quite honest with you,” head coach Michael Fair said. “There was a lot of different read plays in there and he read all of them correctly and was able to finish some runs. What was phenomenal is that he did it all in the first half. He got one drive in the second half, and he played really well.”

The Commodores leaned on their rushing attack scored all six of their touchdowns on the ground. Jamie Shaw scored the last touchdown and Anderson accounted for the rest. “I guess I really am old school in a lot of ways,” Fair said. “All of the old coaches that took some time with me taught me well, and this weather was crazy. It was raining sideways in the second quarter, and if you air it out around this time of year it makes it tough. We wanted to build this team around our ground game.”

Lafayette didn’t allow the Gators offense to get on the board until the 8:27 mark in the fourth quarter. The Commodore defense bent a few times, but for the vast majority of the game they held Lake Cormorant to three and outs.

“I really love how our defense is running to the ball right now,” Fair said. “They have a really talented kid over there taking snaps for them and I thought bottling him up early was key for us. I think the key is pursuit and angles which we have been working on since day one, and I thought we were able to come out and do it tonight.”

With the win tonight, the Commodores clinch the third seed and will travel to Germantown for the first round of the MHSAA playoffs next Friday. According to Fair, the mentality for the Commodores won’t change at all.

“Our mentality isn’t going to change,” Fair said. “We played a great schedule and we have great kids on this team. We were six points from being 11-0 right now, and we just have to do the things to win the close games which is what we’re focusing on in practice. We just have to get back and work on fundamentals and techniques like we have all season.”
