Obituary – Dr. William Fred Chappell

Dr. William Fred Chappell, 65, passed at his home Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019, in Oxford, Mississippi. The visitation will be held Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2019, at Waller Funeral Home from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Born in Fort McClellan, Alabama, to the late William Earl and Nellie Ruth Doss Chappell, Dr. Chappell attended Northwestern University in Illinois. Professor Chappell was awarded the BA in Economics from Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama, in 1976 and the PhD in Economics at The University of South Carolina in 1983. He was a graduate instructor at the University of South Carolina, professor at Clemson University and professor in the Department of Economics at The University of Mississippi where he earned the rank of Associate Professor in 1993. Having earned the Outstanding MBA Instructor Award, Professor Chappell is well-known for his dedication to teaching and student success. A nationally published journal contributor and managerial economic textbook author, he served on many dissertation and Honors Thesis committees. Professor Chappell served 12 years as the Undergraduate Advisor for the department, was a member of the MBA Committee in the School of Business Administration and taught statistics and quantitative methods courses for both BA and MBA degrees and retired from The University of Mississippi after 32 years of service.

William is survived by his wife of 45 years, Donna Chappell of Oxford; two daughters, Heather Chappell Boutwell and her husband, Brooks, of Deerfield, Illinois, and Brooke Chappell Massey and her husband, Jeff, of Saltillo, Mississippi; two brothers, Billy Wayne Chappell of Anniston, Alabama, and Terry Alan Chappell of Denver, Colorado; four grandchildren, Lazarus and Chase Boutwell of Deerfield, Illinois, and William and Harrison Massey of Saltillo.
