Ole Miss sophomore Cecil Wegener took home the individual title and Ole Miss finished sixth as a team in the rain shortened All-American Intercollegiate on Tuesday. Heavy rain in Houston forced cancellation of the final round of the tournament.

“This win is a huge momentum builder for me going into the spring season, and it could not feel better,” said Wegener. “Momentum is very important in golf, and I am very excited to capitalize on it going forward and help my team be the best it can be.”

The sophomore put together two under par rounds to come home with his first medal at Ole Miss. He opened with a 2-under par 70, two shots back after day one, before rising to the top of the leaderboard with a 68 (-4) in round two. Wegener led the team in birdies with eight overall, including four in a five-hole stretch Monday on his way to finishing in red figures at 6-under.

“I’m very proud of Cecil, said head coach Chris Malloy. “He has fought very hard to put himself in this position and to see it pay off for him and breakthrough for the victory is great. As he gets better mentally and is easier on himself, he’s going to be very tough to beat.”

“We are certainly disappointed to not have a chance to make a run at the lead today,” said Malloy. “However, that’s golf. We need to learn how to do a better job out of the gates and put ourselves in a better position.”

“It teaches us the importance of every single shot. I was very pleased with what I saw out of our younger guys this week. Certainly, Cecil played great, but our freshmen got better as well. We will build on this and be prepared as we head into a tough stretch of golf with plenty of great opportunities ahead of us.”

The Rebels return to the course on Sunday for the USF – Ole Miss Challenge in Clearwater Beach, Fla.
