OXFORD – The playoffs are off to a hot start for the Lafayette baseball team.

The Commodores took down Center Hill 7-3 in the second round of the 5A playoffs on Friday night, doing so behind two big offensive innings and a great night of long relief from Zach Meagrow.

“We played well. Probably put up a few more zeros than we want to offensively,” said head coach John Walker. “Down the road that’ll hurt us, but we played well. We did the things we needed to do.”

Lafayette got off to a hot start, scoring three run in the opening inning. They did all their damage in two big innings in the game, later scoring four more runs in the fourth.

Taylor Tarver started the game for the Commodores on the mound but was pulled early on. Replacing him was an electric Zach Meagrow. Meagrow had his stuff.

“Tarver didn’t have his best stuff. He got tired really early. That’s uncharacteristic of him,” Walker said. “But we’re pretty deep on the mound. If one guy isn’t at his best, it’s next man up.”

Hunter Coleman was really good for the Commodores in this one. Coleman drove in two runs in the first inning with a double and then hit a solo shot homer later in the game.

Game two of the three game series will be played Saturday at Center Hill.
