She was born on October 13, 1944, to Ted Halter and Lois Halter. She grew up all over the United States, as her father, an engineer with GE, was transferred often. She then went on to settle in Martinsville, Va., in 1962 to raise her family and began her career as a realtor broker. Judy served as the Martinsville Henry County Board of Realtors President with four separate terms and was appointed to the Virginia Licensure Board by two governors serving 12 years. Her service to the Commonwealth of Virginia was recognized in 2009, when she was awarded Realtor of the Year. In 2012, the National Association of Realtors bestowed Realtor Emeritus for her 40 years of continuous service to her community and dedication to the profession. Judy moved back to her home of Oxford, in 2016, where she was an active member of the Newcomers Club, served as a Ford Center Volunteer, and had recently been invited to serve as a member of the Cedar Oaks Guild.

Left to cherish in her memory is her daughter, Stephanie Lawson (Troy) Crocker; her granddaughter, Elizabeth Crocker of Marietta, Ga.; her brother, Ted Halter; her sister, Kimberly Sanders; and her extended family and friends. Judy was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas J. Childress, Jr.
