Residents of Oxford who attended Central Elementary, or remember it fondly, can now have a piece of Oxford history in their home. The Oxford School District announced bricks that were salvaged during the demolition of the historic school will be made available to the public.

Next week, June 24 through 28, the bricks will be available for pick up at the school district’s central office from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The office is located at 224 Bramlett Blvd.

“The construction crews were able to salvage a few pallets of bricks for us,” Heather Lenard, Oxford School District’s public information officer, said. “My hope is that graduates and/or family members of those who attended Central High School take a brick as a keepsake.”

In February, the Oxford School District’s Board of Trustees officially named the districts newest building Central Elementary School in honor of its predecessor that sat at 409 Washington Avenue. The new elementary school, which scheduled to be ready for the 2020-21 school year, is being constructed in the same location.

Central was Oxford’s African-American school per-integration. A brick will be placed in the Burns-Belfry Museum & Multicultural Center for public display in honor of the Central High School Class of 1969, the last graduation class from the building.

The bricks will first come, first serve and limited to two bricks per person, as supply is limited. Once all the bricks are gone the school district’s website and social media platforms will be alert the public.
