Rebel golf releases schedule, Miller wins 2019 Cotton States

Ole Miss sophomore Charlie Miller faced a familiar face in the finals of this past weekend’s Cotton States Invitational.

Advancing to the finals of the match-play portion of the tournament at Bayou DeSiard Country Club in Louisiana, Miller was matched up one-on-one with his high school teammate, University of Alabama golfer Simms Abney, for the championship.

The third time he has played in the event, Miller finally came out victorious on Sunday. He dominated the back nine on the final day of competition, birdying three straight holes down the stretch to beat Abney 6-and-4.

His win in Louisiana marks the end of a successful summer for Miller. He had previously placed fourth at the Mississippi Amateur Championship and ninth at the Southeastern Amateur.

Just days after the event, Ole Miss released the full schedules for the men’s and women’s golf teams for the 2019-20 season.

The men’s schedule is relatively balanced, running back five tournaments from a year ago and adding five new tournaments to the slate. Highlighting the schedule are trips to Hawaii in October and Cabo San Lucas in March.

“We are extremely excited about how our schedule turned out for this season,” head coach Chris Malloy said. “It will be a great blend of some new courses as well as others that we have a lot of familiarity with. A major goal of ours is to get on every different type of grass that we may see before we get to postseason play. You never know where you will get sent for an NCAA Regional site, so we need to be sure that we have competed on that kind of grass. I know that our guys can’t wait to challenge themselves.”

Meanwhile, the Ole Miss women are coming off their first ever SEC Championship and second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. Like the men, the Ole Miss women will also play in Cabo San Lucas, as well as several locations across the southeast. They’ll play five tournaments in Alabama, Florida and Georgia.

“We are extremely excited to kick off our season in the upcoming weeks,” head coach Kory Henkes said. “We have a schedule that will allow us to play in some of the best tournaments all over the country, as well as Mexico. “We’ll compete against top-notch teams week in and week out that will really push our players to put their best foot forward in every tournament. Our team consists of a talented group who are eager to get back on campus and start competing again.”

The first week of play for both units is the second week of September.
