Oxford offers several different options of entertainment, but one thing it was missing was a place for people to pick up an axe and heave it at a piece of wood.

Civil Axe Throwing has remedied that problem by opening their newest venue, and second one in Mississippi. The venue has been open for three weeks, with a soft-opening that took place in early August. On Friday, they held their official grand opening with a ribbon “chopping” ceremony.

“The first week or two was kind of slow, but as word got out, this past weekend it was really solid,” Jeremy Sarten said. “We had some really good groups come through and seeing a lot of repeats. Repeat customers are good. It means they’re coming and having a good time.”

Sarten runs Civil Axe’s Oxford location.

The venue is located at 3000 Old Taylor Road, two doors down from My Michelle’s and in front of Faulkner Flat’s apartment complex.

There are nine lanes, which people can rent out for an hour. For now, they are taking walk-ins along with reservations, but eventually hope to generate enough business to where it becomes reservations only.

Any skill level is welcome, as Civil Axe Throwing offers what they call ‘Axe-perts’ at each lane whose sole job is to help teach the proper way to throw an axe and to ensure the safety of all participants.

“We’re in an area that is just now starting to develop, so I think we’re in a good spot for the future as this area grows,” Sarten said. “With a Dollar General coming in and (next door) and just as more things are coming in this direction, it’s just going to grow.”

Currently, people are allowed to bring their own alcoholic beverages, but plans are in place to construct a small bar at the front of the location to serve beer. Civil Axe Throwing is working towards securing their alcohol permit with the Alcoholic Beverage Control.

Civil Axe is open 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday, but will begin to expand their hours as business dictates. The cost is $22 per person on Friday and Saturday, and $20 on Sundays. Closed-toed shoes are required to participate in the axe-throwing.
