A Facebook comment with insensitive language made by MS Critterz Board of Directors president Gail Brown resurfaced on social media this week.

It is not known when the comment was posted or what prompted Brown to post the comment, but the post contained racist wording.

“I have a high respect for the good, black true American population. I have no tolerance for n****** and white trash,” Brown’s comment read.

On Wednesday, MS Critterz provided The EAGLE with a statement regarding Brown’s remarks.

“MS Critterz is adamant in pursuing our mission to provide temporary shelter to stray, abandoned and surrendered animals for the purpose of finding permanent suitable homes, to promote adoptions, to find foster homes, to organize transports to our reputable rescue partners and facilitate spay and neuter through our low-cost assistance program. MS Critterz is non-discriminatory on the basis of race, color, religion (creed), gender, gender expression, age, national origin (ancestry) disability, marital status, sexual orientation or military status, in any of its activities or operations,” the statement read.

As of Wednesday, Brown had not stepped down from her position within the LOU community’s only no-kill shelter.

Brown is a part of the 501C3 organization that was contracted to manage the animal shelter and is not employed by the City of Oxford. There are policies in place for City employees regarding social media, but MS Critterz does not fall under those policies, meaning the City cannot take any action regarding Brown.

However, Mayor Robyn Tannehill did provide The EAGLE with a statement about the Facebook comment.

“Let me start by saying, the post disgusts me. It demonstrates a lack of compassion and intelligence,” Tannehill said. “I will not defend this discriminatory post. Although unfortunate, it would be impossible for the City to monitor or regulate the social media posts and comments of its many thousands of private contractors from all over the City, state and nation.”
