Candidate forums for general elections to begin next week

The general election is less than three weeks away, and prospective voters will get one last chance to listen to candidates for Mississippi House and Senate seats starting next week.

The League of Women Voters Oxford/North Mississippi will host three candidate forums for the area’s one state Senate race and two House of Representative races. Each forum will continue the theme from the primary forums, “Listen, Learn, Vote,” and will be moderated, allowing the candidates to give a timed opening statement followed by unscreened questions from the audience.

The first forum will be between District 9 candidates for the state Senate, and will take place on Oct. 21. Current Lafayette County Supervisor and Democratic candidate Kevin Frye will debate with Republican candidate Nicole Akins Boyd. Both Frye and Boyd ran unopposed in the August primaries, paving the way to them squaring off in November.

On the following day, the first of two House of Representative races will hold their forum. District 12 candidates Clay Deweese (Republican) and Tiffany Kilpatrick (Democrat) will debate on Oct. 22. The second House of Representatives forum will take place on Oct. 28, eight days before the general election. District 13 candidates Pamela Denham (Democrat) and Steve Massengill (Republican) will debate each other.

All three forums will be held at the Lafayette County Chancery Building at 301 North Lamar Boulevard in Oxford. Each will begin at 6 p.m., and all members of the community are encouraged to attend and participate.

The general election will take place on Nov. 5 and will include local and state races.
