Obituary – Thomas Ray Gunter

Thomas Ray Gunter, 89, passed away peacefully at home in Abbeville surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2019.  

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 2, 2019, in the Chapel of Waller Funeral Home in Oxford at 11 a.m. with Reverend Randy Hope officiating.  Burial will follow in Abbeville Cemetery.  Visitation will be held Saturday from 9:30-11 a.m. prior to the funeral services at the funeral home.

Mr. Gunter was born August 9, 1930, in Oxford to the late Bennie Ray and Tommie Gallegly Gunter.  Mr. Gunter was a longtime cotton farmer and cattleman, having been an active member of the cattleman’s association.  He was also retired from Lafayette County, where he served as a longtime Supervisor for over 30 years and as Board President and Vice-President for 20 years.

He was a loyal and faithful member of First Baptist Church of Abbeville where he served as a Deacon.  He was a previous member of the Oxford Chamber of Commerce and Three Rivers Development.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Gunter is preceded in death by his son, Michael Andrews, and his sister, Rosie Ingalls. Mr. Gunter is survived by his loving wife, Faye Gunter, of Abbeville, Miss.; a daughter, Diane Gunter Brummett, and her husband, David, of Abbeville; a son, Jon Gunter, of Abbeville; brother, Jon Larry Gunter, and his wife, Jeannette of Nesbit, Miss.; two grandchildren, Emily Callicutt, and her husband, Andy, and Craig Brummett, and his wife, Becky, and five great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will include Zach and Daniel Brummett, Hugh Callicutt, Ward Reaves, Mike Robbins, Scott Fricker, Derek Gunter, and Alan Ingalls.

Memorial contributions in Mr. Gunter’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
