Sue Garrett Treas, 86, passed away at her home surrounded by all of her loving family and friends on Friday, Nov. 1, 2019.  The funeral service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Oxford on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2019, at 1 p.m. with the Reverends Ann Houston Kelly, Will Howie, and Marjorie Buckley officiating.  Visitation will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2019, from 5 -7 p.m. and prior to the service on Wednesday, Nov. 6, from 12-1 p.m. in the fellowship hall of the church.

 

Born on Nov. 20, 1932, in Booneville, Miss., to the late T. G. and Alma Gray Garrett, Sue graduated Valedictorian from Booneville High School where she was active in Future Homemakers of America and the Presbyterian Church.  She graduated from Mississippi State College for Women in 1954.  While at MSCW she was introduced to Charles E. Treas and fell immediately in love.  Sue and Charles married on Nov. 26, 1953, and shared 61 loving years together prior Charles’ death in 2014.  

 

Sue and Charles began their family in Aberdeen, Miss., where they were dedicated members of the First Methodist Church and founders of St. Marks Methodist Church.  Working as a case worker for the Monroe County Welfare Department, Sue also found the time to lovingly raise three daughters while Charles attended the University of Alabama to complete his PhD.  

 

Making Oxford their home in 1966, Sue quickly became active in the community by welcoming other newcomers through Welcome Wagon.  As a dedicated member of First Presbyterian Church (PCUSA), she served as a member of the Session, President of the Women of the Church, a leader for the Presbyterian Youth Fellowship, and worked with Vacation Bible School and The Pantry.  She was an active member of PEO, a philanthropic organization, and volunteered her time for the Lafayette County Interfaith Compassion Ministries, and Meals on Wheels.

 

Sue and Charles shared a love for music and the arts and gifted this to their daughters at an early age by taking them to plays and opera productions.  As a gifted pianist, Sue loved to play all types of music on the piano – from church hymns to Broadway tunes.  Often some of her closest friends would gather together to sing around the piano and laugh together.  She will be remembered for delicious meals when she entertained friends for dinner in her home or take deviled eggs or pound cake to those in need. 

 

Survivors include daughters, Lynn Gray Treas, Susan Bell Treas (Malcolm P. Ewing, Jr.), and Frances Treas Almengual; grandchildren Scott Everett Hux (Dell), Malcolm Tyler Ewing (Molly), and Mallory Gayden Ewing.
