Lafayette High School senior Kimaya Dixon will be continuing her basketball career, playing at Jones College.

The decision is a long time coming for the senior who’s played 118 games of Commodore varsity basketball in her career.

“This feels like a weight off my shoulder. There’s no more pressure,” Dixon said. “It was the right decision. Jones is one of the best (junior) colleges in the nation. It was tough though, between them and another school. I just loved the coaches at Jones. They were kind, and they made it feel like a home when I went on my visit there.”

Dixon was called up to play varsity ball all the way back in the eighth grade. As a freshman, she appeared in 30 games for a team that won the MHSAA 4A State Championship.

Over the last three years, Dixon has developed into a dominant threat from the wing for Lafayette, averaging 15.1 points and 7.1 rebounds as a junior and 16.0 points and 6.3 rebounds thus far through her senior campaign.

For a girl who’s been contributing on the team for so long, Lafayette head coach Shane Linzy had some high words of praise for Dixon.

“This is the payoff as a coach,” Linzy said. “Watching her grow up and play basketball here while also watching her grow up and mature as a young lady, it’s been a great experience. She’s turned out to be a great basketball player and a great young lady. It’s just a win-win in every way. I’m extremely proud of her and know that she’s going to do great things.”

The Lady Commodores sit at 19-5 to this point on the season and will play Friday in the Region 1-5A tournament championship game.
