The Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce is now accepting nominations for the 2020 Citizen of the Year in the Oxford, Lafayette County and University (LOU) Community.

This year’s recipient will be the 49th honoree of the award, which began in 1972. Last year’s winner was Judge Andrew Howorth.

Every year, the Chamber of Commerce recognizes an individual who has made a positive contribution to Oxford, Lafayette County and the University of Mississippi as its Citizen of the Year.

“If you know of someone who has benefited and made a direct, lasting impact on our community through volunteer service, please help recognize them by submitting their name as a nominee for 49th Annual Citizen of the Year,” a statement sent out by the Chamber read.

A completed nomination form, a typewritten biography of the individual and three nomination letters are required for each nomination.

Candidates will be judged by the following criteria: Positive contributions to the LOU Community, contributions above and beyond those normally expected in an elective or appointed office, or above and beyond mere success in a business or profession and perception as a role model for good citizenship and volunteerism in a non-paid capacity.

Deadline to submit a nomination is April 30 at noon. The 49th Citizen of the Year will be announced prior to the Chamber/Economic Development Foundation’s Annual Meeting Luncheon on May 13.
