Students of the Oxford School District will not be returning to their physical classrooms any time soon.

After OSD announced on Thursday that all school campuses would remain closed until March 18 to parents and staff, they extended those closures for a much longer period of time.

Parents were alerted by OSD on Friday that schools will remain closed until at least March 27.

“Based on President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency today, the Oxford School District will be closing schools through at least March 27,” read a letter by school superintendent Brian Harvey. “We are currently working on plans to provide instruction to all students enrolled in the Oxford School District as well as meals to all students who need them throughout this time. More information will be forthcoming over the next few days.”

Harvey’s letter was posted on the district’s app on Friday afternoon.

President Trump declared a national emergency on Friday, paving the way for medical resources to get to those who need them to combat the COVID-19 virus as swiftly as possible. With the declaration, it allows OSD to cancel class for an extended period of time without violating Mississippi state codes.

Neither Lafayette County School District nor Regents of Oxford has made any decisions regarding extending their school closures beyond March 18 at this time.
