MSDH announces second case of COVID-19 in Lafayette County

The Mississippi State Department of Health released the latest number of COVID-19 cases Saturday morning, and March 20 saw the biggest single-day jump since the virus hit the Magnolia State.

There were 60 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the state total to 140. Lafayette County was one of the 28 counties to have a new case, bringing its total to two.

Lafayette County announced its first COVID-19 case on Thursday, announced by Oxford Mayor Robyn Tannehill that morning and later confirmed by the State Department of Health.

On Saturday, new data was released, along with the latest round of numbers. Of the 140 cases in Mississippi, three of them are children 18 years of age or younger. The 40-49 age group has the highest count, with 27, followed by the 60-69 and 70-plus age groups with 26. Ages 18 to 29 have 24 cases, and the 50 to 59 age group has 18.

On Friday, the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution requiring all restaurants in the County to close their dining rooms until further notice. Oxford’s Board of Aldermen approved a civil emergency resolution on Tuesday, requiring restaurants to close their dining rooms until at least April 2. The State Department of Health recommended all restaurants in Mississippi close their dining rooms until further notice.
