MSDH reports 90 new COVID-19 cases; Lafayette County reports first death

The daily number of COVID-19 cases rose once again as the Mississippi State Department of Health reported 90 new COVID-19 cases and four new deaths on Tuesday.

One of those four counties to report a death was Lafayette, who reported its first COVID-19 related death and added one case to bring the total to 15. The statewide total is nearing 1,000 with 937 and 20 deaths, as of 6 p.m. Monday.

Other counties to report deaths were Bolivar, Montgomery and Panola. They were the first deaths to be reported by those counties as well.

Three of the 20 deaths were adults under the age of 50, according to the State Department of Health.

Hinds County has reported the most COVID-19 cases with 90 and DeSoto County has reported 84. Neighboring counties to Lafayette such as Panola has reported seven cases while Pontotoc has reported five and Yalobusha has reported six cases.

The City of Oxford announced on Tuesday that the Board of Aldermen will meet at 10 a.m. on Thursday to discuss extending their “Stay At Home” resolution through April 30. The resolution’s current deadline is for April 6, but President Donald Trump announced on Sunday his recommendation to keep social distancing guidelines in place through April.
