The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department is currently looking into the circumstances surrounding a body being discovered on the side of a road on Friday.

At approximately 7:30 a.m., the sheriff’s department was called to County Road 1029 for a report of an unresponsive male laying on the ground.

Upon the sheriff’s department’s arrival, the male was declared deceased by the Lafayette County coroner and identified as Douglas Smet, a resident of Lafayette County. The investigation is ongoing, but it is believed Smet died of natural causes, according to the sheriff’s department. Smet’s family has been notified.
