The Lafayette County Board of Supervisors met on Friday to discuss additional measures that may need to be taken and provide clarification regarding Governor Tate Reeves’ shelter-in-place order.

The Board approved a third emergency resolution, which mostly fell in line with what Reeves’ order stated. The order went into effect at 5 p.m. on Friday and will run through 8 a.m. on April 20.

The City of Oxford approved its latest resolution during a special meeting called on Thursday.

“We were trying to clarify from the Governor’s most recent (executive order) to what we already had in place,” Board president Mike Roberts said. “We didn’t find a whole lot of discrepancies or differences, but there was some clarifications that (were) needed.”

The County’s resolution falls in line with the statewide order, allowing all essential businesses to remain open and restaurants to continue using curbside, delivery or drive-thru methods. Churches are allowed to have their offices open for day-to-day operations, but on-site services are not allowed in order to fall in line with the CDC guideline of no gatherings of 10 people or more.

Privately owned lakes must adhere to the CDC guidelines of 10 people or less, and Roberts noted that at this time the Corps of Engineers have all boat ramps open at federally-owned and designated lakes.

In the previous resolutions, the Board had not approved any penalties for those who are found in violation. On Friday, they approved a fine of $500 or up to six months in jail.

The Lafayette County Planning Commission’s April meeting is scheduled for April 27, but Roberts noted that meeting could be postponed if Reeves’ executive order is extended or if they are not able to find an adequate and safe way for people to take part in the public hearings scheduled for the meeting.
