In a video posted to her official Facebook page, Oxford Mayor Robyn Tannehill provided several community updates on Wednesday.

The biggest announcement was that the Board of Aldermen will consider extending the current shelter-in-place order that is set to expire along with the statewide order at 8 a.m. on April 20. The special meeting will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday.

“I anticipate it will be extended,” Tannehill said.

Governor Tate Reeves has not said if the statewide order will also be extended beyond Monday, or if he will let it expire. Mississippi reported its highest number of new COVID-19 cases in a day on Wednesday with 273. The state’s current total is at 3,360 cases and 122 coronavirus-related deaths.

After seeing success in their first attempt last week, the City of Oxford and Cathead Vodka are partnering again to provide free hand sanitizer to Oxford residents. One thousand bottles will be made available at Oxford High School beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday. There is a one bottle per car limit, similar to last week’s stations in front of City Hall and the Jackson Avenue Center.

“That went over so well last time, and we were so excited to get to serve our community in a way that we can provide hand sanitizer to people who were not able to find any and people who are not able to afford to purchase any,” Tannehill said. “That’s our goal again.”

The Taylor gin distillery Wonderbird Spirits, which has been providing first responders and healthcare workers with hand sanitizer, is now offering it to the public through the distillery’s website.
