Lafayette County saw its worst spike in COVID-19 cases over the weekend since reporting its first case last month.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported Lafayette County had 28 new presumptive cases and one death between Friday and Sunday. The county’s current total is 67 cases and three deaths since its first case was confirmed on March 19.

Mississippi also saw its worst spike in cases over the weekend, reporting a new single-day high of cases with 300 as of 6 p.m. on Saturday. MSDH reported 238 new cases as of 6 p.m. on Sunday, bringing the state’s current total to 4,512 cases since March 11.

The MSDH reported 23 new deaths from COVID-19 complications over the weekend. Mississippi’s current COVID-19 death total is 169 as of Sunday.

Lafayette County also reported its first long-term care (LTC) facility outbreak last week. On Monday, the outbreak was confirmed to be at the North Mississippi Regional Center’s Oxford campus.

Panola County has reported 36 cases and two deaths. Pontotoc County has reported 18 cases, two deaths and one LTC outbreak. Yalobusha County has reported 16 cases.

Over the weekend, MSDH began providing a breakdown of the state’s cases and the impact it is having on each ethnicity. African-Americans make up 51 percent of Mississippi’s reported cases with 2,302. Caucasians make up 32 percent, with 1,459 cases.

African-Americans make up 63 percent of the state’s reported COVID-19 deaths with 107, while Caucasians make up 36 percent with 61.
