Mississippi saw a decrease in new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday for a second straight day after reporting 300 cases on Sunday.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 204 new cases and 14 deaths as of 6 p.m. on Monday. Mississippi’s totals are now 4,716 cases and 183 deaths since March 11. A two-week period of a steady decline in new COVID-19 cases is one part of the process to fully reopening Mississippi, based on the federal guidelines laid out by President Donald Trump and his Coronavirus Task Force.

Lafayette County reported one new case, bringing its total to 68 cases, three deaths and one long-term care facility outbreak. There were 24 new cases reported on Sunday, which were attributed to the LTC outbreak that was confirmed to be at North Mississippi Regional Center’s Oxford campus.

Over the weekend, Mississippi saw its worst days in terms of new cases reported. There were a total of 538 new COVID-19 cases reported between Saturday and Sunday. A new single-day high of 300 was reported on Sunday.

MSDH also began providing a breakdown of the state’s cases and the impact it is having on each ethnicity. African-Americans make up 51 percent of Mississippi’s reported cases with 2,419. Caucasians make up 32.6 percent with 1,540 cases.

African-Americans make up nearly 64 percent of the state’s reported COVID-19 deaths with 117, while Caucasians make up 35.5 percent with 65.
