Lafayette County saw its second rise of COVID-19 cases last week, but since Thursday, the number of positive cases has slowly descended once more.

After reporting its second-highest daily number of cases on April 23 with 11, Lafayette County reported seven cases over the next four days. The State Department of Health reported no new cases on Monday in Lafayette County as of 6 p.m. on Sunday. The county’s totals are 88 cases and three deaths since March 19.

There were 21 new long-term care facility cases reported since April 23, bringing Lafayette County’s total to 31 LTC cases. North Mississippi Regional Center’s Oxford campus confirmed a COVID-19 outbreak earlier this month.

Mississippi saw a second spike in positive statewide cases at the end of last week, but has since seen those numbers slowly decrease over the weekend. The “peak” of COVID-19 cases was anticipated to be sometime last week, according to many medical officials throughout the state.

The MSDH reported 183 new cases and two deaths on Monday. It is the second-straight day Mississippi reported a decrease after reporting 193 new cases on Sunday. Mississippi’s current totals are now 6,094 cases and 229 deaths since March 11.

The state’s shelter-in-place order expired at 8 a.m. on Monday and shifted to a “Stay at Home” order, per Governor Tate Reeves. The new order relaxed some restrictions throughout Mississippi, but most limitations are still in place through May 11.

Oxford’s Board of Aldermen passed a fourth emergency resolution last Thursday, which goes into effect on April 30 and runs through May 18. The new resolution will allow non-essential businesses to resume curbside service, and all essential businesses are now required to have their employees and customers over the age of six wear a mask while inside.
