The peak of COVID-19 cases in Mississippi has not been officially identified, but Lafayette County is starting to show positive signs.

For the second straight day, Lafayette County did not report any new cases on Tuesday. The County’s totals continue to be 88 reported cases, three deaths and 35 cases at a long-term care facility since March 19.

The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) and Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) held a drive-thru testing site at the Oxford Conference Center last Friday. According to UMMC, 23 people were administered tests at the site. A UMMC spokesman said those test results will take “a few days” to come back.

During a special meeting called on April 23, the Oxford Board of Aldermen adopted a fourth COVID-19 emergency resolution, which required masks or facial coverings be worn by all essential business employees and customers over the age of six.

Oxford police chief Jeff McCutchen told the EAGLE on Tuesday that roughly 220 business checks had been performed, and 15 warnings had been issued regarding masks being properly worn.

“The businesses are doing a good job,” McCutchen said.

The MSDH reported a rise in statewide cases on Tuesday after two days of a decrease in new daily cases. Mississippi reported 248 new cases and 10 deaths as of 6 p.m. on Monday, bringing its totals to 6,342 cases and 239 deaths since March 11.
