Lafayette County School District finalizes new grading and promotion procedures

The Lafayette County School District has finalized its new grading and promotion procedures to coincide with distance learning, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Each student in kindergarten through fifth grade will receive what the district is calling a “Baseline Grade Average” (BGA) established for each subject by averaging the three nine-week grades from the current school year. The BGA will not decrease based on any distance learning activities, and will be used as the fourth nine-week grade for each subject.

Kindergarten through fifth grade students who submit one completed language arts and math distance learning assignment will be given a 100 grade for the fourth nine-week average in each subject. If the assignments are not submitted, the BGA will be the final grade for the fourth nine-week grading period.

Students in sixth through 12th grades will have a BGA established for each course. The average will not decrease based on any distance learning activities. The BGA will be used as the final average for the course, unless the student completes a final summative assignment. The final summative assignment, when completed, will render a grade of 100 for the fourth nine-week average and will allow the fourth nine-week average to be calculated into the final average.

If the assignment is submitted, the baseline average will be calculated along with the final assignment to determine the final grade for the course.

The Lafayette County School Board of Trustees will vote to approve the changes during their May board meeting on May 4. To view the full grading and promotion changes, visit the school district’s website.
