Nearly two months after reporting its first COVID-19 case, Lafayette County has surpassed the century mark.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported three new cases in Lafayette County on Monday, bringing its total number of cases to 101, along with three deaths and 36 cases in long-term care facilities since March 19.

During a special meeting called on Saturday, Oxford emergency management director Jimmy Allgood informed the Board of Aldermen there were “no more than” 16 active cases in Lafayette County. That number did not include the three new cases reported on Monday.

On Tuesday, MSDH reported 234 new cases statewide as of 6 p.m. on Monday. Mississippi’s total is now 9,908 total cases since March 11, and the state could potentially surpass 10,000 cases by Wednesday. Sixteen of the new cases came from LTC facilities, and there are now 115 active outbreaks in LTC facilities.

There were 22 new deaths reported on Tuesday, but seven of them were waiting for death certificate reports and occurred between April 25 and May 3. Mississippi has a total of 457 deaths.

After dropping below 400 on Monday, the number of Mississippians who are hospitalized due to COVID-19 rose to 450, according to MSDH.

MSDH also reported that there are a presumed 6,268 recoveries from COVID-19 as of May 3. As of Tuesday, more than 96,000 tests had been administered to Mississippians.
