Lafayette County saw a small surge in COVID-19 cases last week, but the start of this week has been a different story.

For the second straight day, Lafayette County did not report a new case on Tuesday. There were two new cases reported on Sunday, bringing the County’s total to 109 cases, three deaths and 37 long-term care facility cases.

During Monday’s Lafayette County Board of Supervisors meeting, emergency management director Steve Quarles told the Board there were 12 active coronavirus cases as of Sunday. Quarles also provided the Board with an update on the county’s long-term care facilities.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 272 new cases on Tuesday, which followed two straight days of a decrease in new cases. The state’s total is now 11,704 reported cases. As of Tuesday, MSDH reported 117,760 tests had been administered for an infection rate of 9.9 percent in Mississippi. As of Sunday, 7,681 Mississippians had been presumed to have recovered from COVID-19.

Also as of Sunday, 389 Mississippians were hospitalized due to COVID-19 complications with 75 of those on ventilators, according to MSDH.

The state reported its highest single-day death count on Tuesday with 27. Mississippi’s total deaths due to COVID-19 now sits at 554 as of 6 p.m. on Monday.
