A University of Mississippi employee and student have tested positive for COVID-19, the school announced on Wednesday.

In a UM Today memo sent out to Ole Miss faculty, staff and students, the University said they were informed of the two positive tests by the Mississippi State Department of Health on Wednesday. They were providing the emergency notification to stay in compliance with the federal Jeanne Cleary Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.

The EAGLE confirmed through an Ole Miss athletics spokesman that it was a student-athlete and staff member who tested positive.

Ole Miss student-athletes began returning to campus for voluntary workouts that will begin on June 8. Each player was tested for COVID-19 and had the antibody test administered, along with filling out a questionnaire.

“The welfare and safety of our community during this time is our primary concern,” the memo read. “The Mississippi State Department of Health is currently conducting contact tracing and will communicate with those who may have been in close contact with these individuals.”

In March, the University announced a student reported to them they had tested positive for COVID-19. The student had not returned to Oxford and was staying back in their home state.

This is the second UM employee reported to have tested positive for the coronavirus. Professor Kevin Malloy passed away in April due to complications from COVID-19.
