Local lore says William Faulkner’s grandfather, J. W. T. “Young Colonel” Falkner, owned the first auto in Oxford. He never drove, rather he was chauffeured, and quite the character he was reported to be.
Pictured here is a group of locals with one of the first cars.
The home in the background is Cedar Oaks before it was moved from the location now occupied by the Graduate Oxford.
A little farther down North Lamar toward the Square was the site of the town’s first auto garage. It stood across the street from today’s Chancery Court Building and was a hub of activity back in the day.
