Candidates have just four two days to toss their hats into the municipal government race.
The qualification period to run in the June election for Oxford aldermen or mayor ends at 5 p.m. on Friday.
In wards 2-6, only the current sitting aldermen have qualified to run. In Ward 1, incumbent alderman Rick Addy has not qualified to run to retain his seat. Erin Smith and William Summers Mayo have both qualified to run for Ward 1 alderman.
In the mayor race, only incumbent Mayor Robyn Tannehill has filled out the necessary paperwork.
To qualify, candidates must live in the ward where they are seeking election for alderman and have not been convicted of a felony. If they are running as a Republican or Democrat they will pay a $10 fee when filing their paperwork at the City Clerk’s Office in City Hall.
Independent candidates do not pay a fee but will need 50 signatures from any qualified voter in Oxford.
The primary for the municipal election is on April 1. If necessary, a runoff will occur on April 22.
Absentee voting for the primary begins on Feb. 17. The general election is on June 3. There will not be a runoff for the general election. The most votes will win.
All Oxford registered voters will vote at the Oxford Conference Center.
Qualification packets are available at City Hall and the Lafayette County Clerk’s Office; however, they must be turned in at the Clerk’s Office at City Hall.
