The Hoka’s late-night viewings of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” were epic! Audience

participation was phenomenal. Flying toast, rice, water, hotdogs, and watching the movie while

ketchup oozed down the screen.

Name me another theater where dogs just wandered in among a mixture of seating: rocking chairs, old church pews, Sealtest milk crates, and 2×4 amateur-made benches. At the center of it all was Ron Shapiro himself, evermore the entertainer and part town crier and another part carnival barker, introducing the movies and making them sound exciting, like we were privileged to be there.

My first time at The Hoka was with a blind date while I was at Ole Miss.

We went to a late night showing of “Rocky Horror.” I had never been to a funkier place in my life, the vibe was so cool. Nothing in the building matched, and no one cared. People were shouting out, throwing stuff, and singing all the words to the movie, and it was a blast!

We sat in chairs with torn upholstery and ate the best cheesecake I ever had (which ended up being the best part of the date).
