Lafayette County schools were placed on lockdown this morning after a report came in that an escaped convicted murderer was in the area.

According to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office, at about 8:50 a.m. the Oxford Police Department notified the sheriff’s office that they received an anonymous call reporting that a person in the area of Highway 6 East and F.D. Buddy East Parkway resembled Nevin Whetstone, 71, who escaped from Parchman prison on Tuesday.

“In an abundance of caution” and collaboration with OPD, Lafayette County schools were promptly notified and placed on lockdown while an extensive search of the area was conducted, according to a press release from the LCSO.

After a thorough investigation, law enforcement determined the tip was not credible, and the lockdown was lifted.

“Our top priority is always the safety of our children and our community,” said Sheriff Joey East. “I want to thank the Oxford Police Department and Lafayette County Emergency Management for their swift response and partnership in ensuring a thorough and efficient search. We appreciate the cooperation of the schools and the public as we worked to verify the area was safe.”

Whetstone is serving a life sentence for the 1983 murder of Loretta Darlene Steele.
