Habitat for Humanity and St. Andrews Methodist Church are joining forces to build recyclable ramps for Oxford residents.

The ramps are being built as a way for the Oxford community, as well as Habitat and St. Andrews, to give back to those in need, according to Oxford Habitat for Humanity Vice President Joe Skinner.

The first ramp will be built this Tuesday at 135 Country Road. The tools and materials have already been purchased through donations and members of the University Police Department volunteering to build the ramp.

A spokesman for Habitat for Humanity said the hope is that Habitat for Humanity and St. Andrews can make building recyclable ramps a weekly event.

Habitat for Humanity originally wanted to build homes in the community, however land was too expensive. The ramps will also be recyclable, so they can be taken down when those using the ramps don’t need them any more.

The ramps will be built for those in the community who are elderly, amputees or veterans who need assistance.

Donations from the Oxford community will only go towards the building materials and tools, and the manpower will be supplied through volunteers.

Skinner said donations can be made through mail and over the phone, and that Habitat is in the process of building an online portal to donate over the Internet.
