The Oxford Middle School seventh-grade football team started fast and cruised to a 38-0 win at Clarksdale on Tuesday to improve to 2-0.
The Chargers scored a pair of second-quarter touchdowns to break a 6-all tie and blanked Clarksdale, 20-0, in the second half. Quarterback Locke Elliott had a pair of touchdown passes for Oxford while Kywuan Phillips started the Chargers’ offense with a 60-yard run deep into Clarksdale territory on Oxford’s first play and added touchdown runs of 23 and 30 yards, both coming in the first half.
Elliott’s touchdown passes covered 15 yards to Alex Childers and 50 yards to Dekyeron Johnson.
“We had the ball seven possessions tonight, scored on six of them and were deep in Clarksdale territory on the seventh possession when we fumbled,” Oxford coach Mike Hardwick said. “I like our run-pass balance this year. When we run the ball effectively, it opens up our passing game, which makes it fun.”
Spencer Morgan had an 8-yard touchdown run for Oxford in the third quarter, and the defense finished the scoring when Earl Shaw broke in front of a pass and returned it 45-yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Oxford will return to action this Tuesday against South Panola for its home opener at Bobby Holcomb Field starting at 5:30 p.m.
