SANTA ROSA BEACH, Florida — Dr. Columbus Burwell “C.B.” Hopper, 83, died Sunday, Oct. 4, 2015, at Grand Boulevard Rehab Center in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. A graveside memorial service will take place Friday, at 2 p.m. at Oxford Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Robert Allen officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service from noon until 1:30 p.m. at Waller Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Forest City, North Carolina, he was the retired Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the University of Mississippi. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Oxford. While teaching, he was a member of the American Sociological Association, the Alabama-Mississippi Sociological Association where he served as president and the Southern Sociological Association. Dr. Hopper also served in the United States Army.

Survivors include his wife Patricia “Pat” Hopper of Oxford; son, Chris Hopper of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida; and a sister, Raye McMurray of Forest City, North Carolina.
