The Area IV Special Olympics rollerskating meet will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Skatetasia Skating Center in Sardis.
Supporters and volunteers are invited to the event that is being sponsored by Mississippi Special Olympics and the University of Mississippi Department of Health, Exercise Science and Recreation Management.
Between 75 and 125 athletes from Lafayette, Calhoun, Grenada, Panola, Tallahatchie and Yalobusha counties are expected to participate in the roller skating meet.
Athletes can compete in three different races: 50-meter, 100-meter and scooterboard. The arena will be open from 8 a.m. to noon for athletes and volunteers to skate for free.
“The best part of the event is seeing the athletes’ smiles and happiness when competing and receiving their ribbons,” said Michael A Dupper, assistant professor of health, exercise science and recreation management. “That’s in addition to the volunteers’ selfless volunteerism and joy of being a pivotal part of the games.”
The event is free to attend. Anyone who wants to volunteer should call Vanessa Cazas-Moreno at 662-915-5521 by Wednesday (Nov. 11).
