Holidays bring us together

From the white and colored lights decorating buildings to wreaths hanging on top of light posts and a runner dressed in a full Santa suit running through the Square, it’s safe to say Oxford is in the Christmas spirit.

We’re fortunate to live in a community that brings residents together through functions, charities and other fellowship opportunities during the holiday season. Check out our community calendar and you’ll see multiple events, ranging from Monday’s Christmas Parade to wreath workshops, programs on how to stay healthy during the holidays and numerous Christmas parties that invite all in the community to participate.

The L-O-U community also offers many events for children and families, ranging from pictures with Santa at The Country Club of Oxford or Holli’s Sweet Tooth to the lighting of the Square Christmas tree and Saturday’s Oxford’s Maker’s Market. We at the EAGLE enjoy watching as families come together for these events, making memories for years to come.

The less fortunate and nonprofit organizations are remembered during the holiday season, as multiple churches serve as drop-off locations for a variety of charity donations, The Pantry and Meals on Wheels provide families with Christmas dinner and The Christmas Store provides toys for in-need children.

Oxford’s community-minded spirit can be felt year-round, but it is especially strong during the holidays. We encourage you to participate in some of the events that help make Oxford such a special and welcoming community for students, young professionals, families, businessmen and retirees. Use this Christmas season to think about how you can contribute to Oxford’s community feel and get to know others in your community.

Not sure where to start or what events to attend? Check out our community calendar on Page 2A and highlight a few functions or organizations that interest you. Give Visit Oxford a call or check out Volunteer Oxford’s Facebook page. Both keep calendars of events and know many organizations and groups that would love to welcome new members or volunteers into their ranks.

Giving your time to community organizations will not only increase your love of the town you call home, but will also enhance your experience as a resident. Reserve an evening to get out of your comfort zone and attend a community event or group meeting. We promise you’ll be glad you did.
