The second person involved in a drug bust in 2014 where Oxford police investigators found more than 28 pounds of marijuana has been sentenced to prison.

In October 2014, Able Ruiz Jr., 31, and Joanna Orona, 36, both of Porterville, California, were stopped by OPD officers during an early morning traffic stop. The K-9, “Jack” altered officers to the presence of narcotics. A search warrant was obtained to search the vehicle and officers found 28 pounds of marijuana and 0.3 grams of cocaine in multiple compartments inside the vehicle.

In July 2015, Orona pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges and was sentenced to 10 years in prison with four years suspended. She will serve six years before being considered for parole.

During the January court term, Ruiz pleaded guilty to trafficking and possession charges. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison with 10 years suspended and 10 years to serve.

If either violates their parole after release then they could face the rest of their suspended sentence.

LEGAL LINGO DEFINED

— When a case is retired to files, the charges are not prosecuted, but have not been dismissed either. They are not usually brought up again unless the defendant commits another similar crime.

— If a sentence is suspended, the defendant may, or may not, serve some time in prison and then is generally placed on probation. If the probation is violated, they could go back to jail to serve the remainder of the suspended sentence.

— Intense supervised probation is essentially house arrest where a defendant must remain home unless at work, church or other pre-approved locations.

— Misdemeanor charges can appear in the court term for two reasons. Generally they are handled at the lower court level first but then appealed to the Circuit Court, like first-time DUI charges. Some felony charges are reduced to a misdemeanor as part of a plea agreement.
