Bai “Chris” Yuntian from Beijing, China, became a second grader at Oxford University School from the end of January until the middle of February. He was visiting Mississippi during his Chinese New Year vacation and wished to learn more about an American classroom setting.
A family member, whose child had previously attended OUS, wanted Chris to experience the multicultural school to receive one-on-one instruction in a nurturing environment.
“Chris spoke very little English but made friends quickly and really seemed to enjoy himself,” teacher Lakan How said. “He would create math problems for me to solve on the board during inside recess.”
Howe said he could play the piano beautifully.
“It was such a rewarding experience to see the students of our wonderful school overcome the language barrier and cultural differences to welcome a new friend graciously,” Howe said
