Chick Drewrey isn’t in any rush to hire Lafayette’s next head football coach, but the Commodores’ athletic director admitted he’d like to make his pick sooner rather than later.

Lafayette is looking for a replacement for Eric Robertson, who’s leaving after four seasons as the head coach and 11 overall to join former Lafayette coach Anthony Hart’s staff at Madison Central as the defensive coordinator. The Commodores will also have a new offensive coordinator with Dusty Finley also joining the Jaguars’ staff.

The job was posted Friday, but Drewrey said he began receiving phone calls and resumes Thursday once word got out that Robertson was leaving. As of Monday afternoon, Drewrey said approximately 30 interested candidates had reached out to him.

Ideally, Drewrey would like to have a new coach in place before Lafayette starts spring practice in late April, but “it’s not necessary,” he said. Robertson’s contract with the school district is up in June.

“We’ve got good coaches there,” Drewrey said. “We’d like to (have a coach hired before spring) just because the sooner the new coach is in place, the easier it makes it on everybody. You’ve got limited days in spring practice, and you don’t want to waste any of them.

“There’s a lot of interest in the job. It’s a great job. Don’t have a timeline, but I’m sure we’ll have somebody ready to recommend the first Monday in April.”

Coaches on the current staff will be considered should any apply, Drewrey said. Nobody on staff has been designated as an interim coach.

Drewrey said he’s simply looking for the candidate he believes can best continue the Commodores’ recent run of success, which includes MHSAA Class 4A championships in 2010 and 2011. Robertson led Lafayette to the playoffs each of the last four seasons, including a North Half title in 2013.

“Just the best football coach we can get that’s a good fit for Lafayette and that’s going to fit in with all the other coaches,” Drewrey said. “I don’t think it’s any secret that Lafayette is a great place to coach. I don’t think we’re going to have a hard time finding someone. There’s going to be a lot of interest.”
