The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department is currently on scene at County Road 424 investigating a one-vehicle wreck involving Lafayette County School Bus No. 16.
Officials confirmed that the bus ran off the side of the road but did not roll over.
Chief Investigator Alan Wilburn said as of 6 p.m., there have only been minor injuries reported thus far.
April Knighton’s two sons, JC, 12, and Justin, 5, were two of seven children remaining on the bus when the driver went off the side of the road and hit a tree.
“She normally has about 60 kids (on the bus),” Knighton said. “Luckily she was almost done with the route and only had seven.”
Justin suffered a minor cut near his right eye. JC wasn’t injured.
Knighton said one boy made it to the back of the bus and opened the door to help the others off the bus.
“I’m just glad it wasn’t worse,” Knighton said.
All seven students and driver were taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi for evaluation.
Wilburn said investigators have not yet determined what caused the driver to veer off the road.
