Mississippi Secretary of State Delbert is concerned about the upcoming presidential election.

It’s not that he expects problems at the polls in Mississippi. To the contrary, he is worried that voters will not go to the polls.

Hosemann said an overall lack of appeal of both candidates may lead to voter apathy and he’s concerned about low turnout.

“All we hear about is talk about FBI investigations into emails and overweight beauty queens, not the issues,” Hosemann said in a visit to the EAGLE this week. “It will hurt (voter turnout).”

He’s right that Mississippi appears headed toward low voter turnout for a presidential election, based on absentee ballots cast so far that are lower than the 2012 presidential election.

But we hope that voters will realize in the final hours that the right to vote is an American privilege we should take seriously.

In regard to accusations of a rigged election, Hosemann said that Mississippi voters should be comfortable that “it will be done right,” and that the only cause for concern is those registered voters who don’t go to the polls.

He’s right, of course. So, we hope Mississippians will get to the polls on November 8 and vote in higher numbers than expected.
