Erica Ramsey spends her days at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi helping patients in the Intensive Care Unit.
On Monday, she was on a different floor of the hospital, this time as a patient, and giving birth to the first baby born at BMH in 2017.
Olivia Kate Ramsey was born at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 2, weighing 5 pounds and 14 ounces.
Ramsey was due to deliver Olivia Kate on Jan. 20 but went into labor on New Year’s Day.
“We were the only ones here on the floor when we got here,” Ramsey said. “So I thought we had a good chance at having the first baby of the year.”
Her labor lasted 36 hours and Ramsey, and her husband, Justin, focused on their daughter coming into the world. Ramsey said she was a bit surprised no other babies had been born by then when she found out Olivia Kate was indeed the first baby of the year.
Baptist presented the Ramseys with a gift basket filled with baby items, including a baby blanket, clothes, diapers and more.
“It’s really thoughtful,” she said.
Being a nurse and now a patient at the same time has given Ramsey a new respect for her coworkers on the Labor and Delivery floor.
“They’ve all been very caring and professional,” she said. “We’ve received great care.”
The Ramseys expect to bring Olivia Kate to their home in Oxford today.
