The superlatives keep coming this year for our local schools.
Now, you can add the Oxford High School cheerleading team to the list of big winners.
The OHS cheerleaders won the Universal Cheerleaders Association National Championship this past weekend in the medium division of Game Day competition. The event was on national television and Oxford’s team competed against others from throughout the country.
Cheerleading has of course been competitive for decades and squads like Oxford’s start working in the summer just like football teams. The difference for cheerleading is that football has long since been over, but cheer practice has continued leading up to this big event in Orlando.
The victory is one the school is celebrating, and OHS principal Bradley Robinson — whose wife, Nicole, is a co-coach of the cheer squad — speaks for the entire community when he says it is exciting to see the hard work pay off.
We congratulate the Oxford High School cheerleading team, including all members, coaches, parents and supporters. A national championship is something to cherish for a lifetime, and it speaks volumes about the talent and commitment we have at Oxford High School.
