Frank R. Banks

Dr. Frank R. Banks, 80, died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017, at Oxford Health and Rehab in Oxford. The memorial service will be held Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017, at 3 p.m. in the Sanctuary of Oxford-University United Methodist Church with the Rev. Eddie Rester and the Rev. Warren Black officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 1 p.m. in the activity center at Oxford-University United Methodist Church. Waller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Jasper, Alabama, to the late George Graydon and Verna Lee Haynes Banks, Dr. Banks grew up in Amory. Following retirement, Frank and Lucy moved to Oxford. He was a member of Oxford-University United Methodist Church where he was active in the Sojourners Sunday school class. He graduated from the University of Mississippi Medical School, completed his residency in Columbia, Missouri, and went on to practice medicine in Smithville, Missouri. In 1970, he moved to Jackson, and practiced at Ball Pittman Lewis & Banks Clinic for Women as well as being on staff at Hinds General Hospital, St. Dominic’s Hospital and Rankin General Hospital. During his medical career, he was proud to have delivered over 5,000 babies. He was a member of numerous medical associations. Dr. Banks also found time for hobbies such as hiking, snow skiing, snow shoeing, biking and boating. He was an avid supporter of all Ole Miss sports and a proud member of the Beacon Coffee Club. He found great enjoyment in travel and vacationing, especially in Beaver Creek, Colorado, Santa Fe, New Mexico and Orange Beach, Alabama. Dr. Banks was a veteran of the United States Air Force where he served as a flight surgeon achieving the rank of Captain.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Gerald and Donald Banks.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Lucy Smith Banks of Oxford; daughters, Kathy Banks Vann and her husband, Curtis of Baton Rouge, Louisana and Suzanne Butler Durfey and her husband, Allan of Madison; son, Frank R. Banks II of Dallas, Texas; four grandchildren, Haley Banks Yurkow, Brett Vann, Charlie Banks and Will Tanner and two great-grandchildren.
