Lafayette is making a habit of state championships this year.
First, the Lafayette football team won a state championship. Now, the Lafayette High School girl’s basketball team has claimed a 4A state championship.
Not since the days of Jennifer Gillom (1982) has Lafayette won a girl’s title in basketball but this 2017 team did it Thursday night in the Mississippi Coliseum with the stance of champions who belonged in the winner’s circle.
Coach Shayne Linzy’s team had a solid game plan against Ripley in the final and it was executed to near perfection, with the Commodores (30-3) showing poise throughout and claiming the title in a full team effort.
Winning a championship is never easy. It begins with hard days in the offseason and requires synergy throughout the season. But Lafayette did that and more this year in dominating Class 4A for the most part.
We are proud of the Lafayette High School girl’s team and proud that the school system claimed yet another state title.
It is a victory for the entire school system and one everybody can celebrate. Congratulations to coach Linzy and to Lafayette for claiming the Class 4A state championship 2017 in girl’s basketball.
