Eber

Eugene “Gene” C. Eber, affectionately known by many as “grandpa” died early Saturday morning, July 15th, at the age of 98.  He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of 72 years; two children, Fran Fuller and Tom Eber, three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.

He was born in Benton Harbor, Michigan, living his early years in northern Indiana where he met Dorothy.  There he remained until 1968 when they moved to Oxford. Gene and Dorothy loved Oxford and Mississippi, never regretting leaving the frozen north.

Gene was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Army Air Corps from 1941 to 1945.  Well known for his patriotism, he was an active member of the American Legion until his health declined.  During his years in Oxford, he was active in Rotary, the Chamber of Commerce, made occasional food runs for the Pantry and participated in various other community activities.

He loved music and dancing, particularly the Polka.  Friday nights you would find them at the Legion dancing and singing karaoke.

Special thanks to Tonya Gipson, Mae Conard and Carol Broyles for their loving care for “Grandpa.”

There will be a memorial at the American Legion on Saturday, Aug. 5 at 2 p.m.  In lieu of flowers please make any gifts to the Disabled American Veterans.
